Why do ‘believers’ think it’s OK for people to die in pain?

I REFER to an article in the Guernsey Press of Wednesday 1 December 2021 entitled Assisted Dying Vote ‘shocks’ Catholic Church.

Published

I will begin by quoting a famous hymn: All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, The ‘lord god’ made them all.

I am not a believer: scientific fact tells me otherwise. We do not let our animals die in pain – cats dogs and horses with untreatable injuries. We end their lives to prevent suffering – it would be cruel not to.

So why do ‘believers’ think it is OK for people to die in pain?

The ‘believers’ may believe in a god, but they are not god. Their choice is what they choose for themselves – it is a personal choice but not one that everyone should be made to adhere to.

This is about individual choice – nobody should be forced to prolong their life based on another’s beliefs.

Now, in my late 70s, I don’t know if I will ever have to choose the option of assisted dying.

However, I should not like to be forced, because of a lack of that option locally, to travel to Switzerland and leave the planet before my time without family and friends around. That would be both hurtful and cruel to all concerned.

A recent British census revealed that over 50% of people describe themselves as non-religious; so, I fail to understand how a minority church feels able to dictate to the majority.
