Old greenhouse sites should be looked at as chance to recreate species-rich habitats

LA SOCIETE GUERNESIAISE strongly opposes any moves that would relax the current laws concerning redundant greenhouses. Deputy Ferbrache appears to support an island-wide relaxation whilst Deputy Falla suggests a more selective approach. We are firmly of the opinion that any relaxation would open the door to further development. The island must continue to provide housing within the main centres, the main centre outer areas and the local centres. Any changes to the current spatial plan must be as part of the next review of the island plan. The new plan must include the strategy for nature and embrace 30 by 30 as signed by the G7 and the European Union in December 2022. This initiative to set aside 30% of land and sea to help combat climate change and increase biodiversity can happen on Guernsey with commitment from the States.

All too often redundant greenhouses and small plots of agricultural land are dismissed as being uneconomical, but on an island, as intensively farmed as Guernsey is, they are often richer in flora and fauna. Old greenhouse sites to some eyes may look unsightly, but the areas of scrub are a rich resource for wildlife. Rather than look at agricultural land and consider if it is economically viable, we should be looking at it as an opportunity to recreate species-rich habitats. They could be used for new green lanes, create cycle paths, community woodlands, species-rich grassland, and the creation of new wetlands. The environmental benefits to ourselves and wildlife are endless.

La Societe has proved that old glasshouse sites can be havens for wildlife, and our two orchards at Jardin de Lorette, Capelles and La Marette in the Vale are set to become designated as Areas of Biological Importance. La Societe would like to invite Deputies Ferbrache and Falla to visit these reserves with them, to see what can be achieved.
