Incentivise households to produce their own energy by providing a grant
AHEAD of the forthcoming Electricity Strategy for Guernsey discussions, we should all take a step back. The strategy, well thought through as it is, focuses principally on providing additional supply to satisfy growing needs. However, if we as an island are to even try to meet our net-zero goals, we should be approaching the issue from the other end.
If everyone on the island were incentivised to install their own generation – solar panels, insulation, heat pump – the requirement to supply centrally would drop significantly. £30,000 per household as a grant would a) remove the need for a new cable b) significantly upscale the industry on the island and c) give people responsibility for their own energy use.
And as a by-product reduce the influence of Guernsey Electricity. Maybe why it isn’t talked up in the strategy?
