GST should be accepted – but purely as a luxury tax

SEVERAL weeks ago Deputy Mahoney was front page news doing a Winston Churchill impersonation, we need your money as the States is now in a desperate situation – projects etc. not going ahead because of lack of finance.

May we point out at this stage that the present government are not to blame for this situation. This has been building up for at least the last two to three elected governments and there are, of course, several deputies still operating now from those governments, so maybe his finger should be pointing at them.

Deputy Mahoney asks the public for their views on how to improve our finances.

At the moment GST again seems to be one of the answers.

As an individual I was totally against GST, as this would affect many lower-class and middle-class families. Maybe GST is a good idea, but looking at this island there are many who could afford it. This island is cash rich and a GST should be accepted, but purely as a luxury tax. One only has to look at the expensive cars on the road today. BMW, Audi, Range Rovers, Porsche, Bentleys etc.

As an example, bring in GST on any sales of these vehicles or revert back to car tax – any vehicle over £35,000 should be highly taxed, which leaves that level as being affordable to the lower-class and middle-class population.

This island is very rich, one has only to look at the properties being sold etc.

Will our States agree to this, or will they look at their own lifestyles? Just another idea for Deputy Mahoney and P&R to think about.
