We don’t need to go to Valencia or Paris – we need a secure jet to Gatwick

I HAVE just read today’s Guernsey Press coverage of the current situation regarding our state airline – catastrophic is putting it mildly. How can we allow this to happen?

We had a reliable functioning means of connectivity and now we are becoming a laughing stock. We do not need to go to Valencia, Paris, Stansted etc., we need to have a safe and secure route to Gatwick which we have via the Embraer 195, which is about to disappear. There must be an authority who can prevent this from happening. We do not need any wet leased aircraft or crew, as the management seems to think might be necessary in order to service the ridiculously extended number of routes now being launched but are already proving to be problematical. The States should now step in to ensure that the island is not put at risk by curtailing or damaging our reputation as an important financial centre and well-recognised tourist destination. Act now before it is too late and we get to read in the GP about the sorry state of our connectivity. This is a very serious state of affairs but seems to be being taken very lightly by all concerned – we must keep the jet.

We have very competent and well-trained flying crew who are briefed on the conditions of landing in Guernsey. We cannot allow any lapse in this standard of competence by wet leasing planes and crew who may be competent elsewhere but totally untrained in operating in Guernsey.

In my view it is an insult to our well trained existing and respected flying crews to think they can be substituted in such a way.
