Munro makes 50m freestyle final in Belgium

NOT at his very best, Miles Munro still enjoyed an excellent weekend representing Great Britain at the Flanders Speedo Cup in Antwerp, Belgium.

Seen as a key competition for all of those elite British swimmers competing in the British Championships this spring, 18-year-old Guernseyman Munro reached the 50m freestyle final.

He qualified as fifth-fastest in a strong field with a time of 23.54sec., which he then marginally improved on with a 23.50 that helped him finish seventh in the final.

Although outside of his PB and island record of 22.58, it was still an impressive effort from the teenager, who saw GB team-mate Benjamin Proud win the race, beating Krisztian Takacs of Hungary and Pieter Timmers of Germany.

There was not quite as good news in the 100m freestyle, where his time of 52.46 saw him finish as the 18th- fastest swimmer in the heats and miss out on qualifying for either the 'A' or 'B' finals.

And it was a similar story in the 50m butterfly where he touched in 26.24 and missed out on both finals, finishing 23rd overall, albeit out of an entry of well over 60 swimmers from all over Europe.
