Desperques adds his 14th island billiards title to CV

MARTYN DESPERQUES is out on his own on the local billiards scene, so it was no surprise that he won his 14th consecutive Island Billiards championship against Dave Bullock.

Playing an opponent in his first final and returning to billiards after many years out, Desperques made four breaks of over 50 to win comfortably 500-158.

After an even first 50 points, Desperques stretched away with breaks of 57 and 56, before a best of 77 put him out of sight at 321-115.

Bullock showed good signs with breaks of 28 and 23, but was always likely to be second best.

Desperques’ 64 took him to the brink of the title, which sees him close to within five of Norman Wale’s record of 19 island titles.

This weekend sees the start of the inter-insulars at the Gremlin Club, with Adam Shorto looking for a third CI snooker title on Friday evening.

Shorto will face Gary Britton, who came back from 3-0 down to beat Aaron Canavan 4-3 in Jersey’s island final.

On Saturday afternoon, the revamped Upton gets its first airing as the ‘B’ inter-insular, which only features players who have not represented the island at full inter-insular level.

Played in the same style as the ‘A’ match, Dave Gilmour captains the side that includes Roscoe Cloarec, Kelvin Du Feu and Mark Gauvain, after the latter beat Miles Plumley 2-0 in a play-off.

Saturday evening sees the Team Billiards Inter-Insular take place, with the Sarnian side looking to upset the form book through Martyn Desperques, Steve Le Poidevin, Ian Le Maitre, Adrian Holley and Dave Bullock.
