Raiders survive test of mud and rain

RAIDERS emerged from a Sevenoaks mudbath with a seventh London & South East Premier win in eight, but with no bonus point secured they fall a point further adrift of the flying Wimbledon and Rochford Hundred.

Head coach Jordan Reynolds was, though, just glad to get the 17-10 win in awful conditions where identifying which players were on which side became an issue as the rain poured down in Kent.

‘I’ve never seen a pitch that bad and I’ve seen some poor ones in my 15 years over here,’ said Reynolds who watched his men establish a vital 17-3 lead by the break and then, as the home team enjoyed the wind and slope advantage, held on.

‘The weather was a real leveller and they threw everything at us,’ added Reynolds who felt that had the game been played in the dry his team’s class would have shone through and they might have won far more easily.

Top scorer Anthony Armstrong helped himself to two more tries and he also played a vital hand in the other for late call-up Chris Ahne.

Owen Thomas managed one conversion.

Raiders remain third in the table, now well clear of fourth place.
