Campaigner to talk about the risks of ‘cosmetic tourism’

A campaigner against rogue cosmetic practitioners will be in Guernsey later this month to talk about the risks of ‘cosmetic tourism’, where people go overseas for surgery or other cosmetic treatment, or accept it from an unaccredited practitioner.

Ashton Collins co-founded Save Face with her husband Brett, in 2014, with the aim of raising awareness of the risks of accepting cheap surgery that could end up being botched and doing serious harm, such as Brazilian butt lifts, which have led to reports of women dying after the procedure.

In Guernsey there have been situations where people who have gone overseas for treatment have returned to the island only to suffer complications which then need treated.

Some cosmetic treatments have also been given locally by practitioners visiting for just a day, but if someone has complications afterwards, there are concerns that the patient could effectively be ‘abandoned’, with nobody around to help them.

Save Face provides a list of accredited practitioners – including Guernsey-based ones – based on an assessment model which Mrs Collins developed using her experience working in the accreditation sector.

She has been at the forefront of media campaigns that have led to investigations and investigations of a number of rogue practitioners.

One of these was an effort, with MP Laura Trott, to have it made illegal for children under 18 to be injected with botox or cosmetic fillers. That led to a new being passed to this effect in 2021.

The event in March, Navigating Aesthetics – Finding Your Way to Safe & Effective Treatments, is being sponsored by Roseneath Skin Clinic, and will also include a talk and demonstration from Jamie Cross of Lynton Lasers who will compare lasers used for body shaping and provide a live demonstration.
