GRL so close to snatching draw
GUERNSEY Raiders Ladies came within a whisker of what would have been a remarkable draw against promotion-chasing London Irish on Saturday.
That whisker was actually more like a couple of metres, which is how far short Aimee Le Bachelet’s last-gasp conversion attempt fell short of the posts.
Understandably, all of her teammates were quick to console the GRL scrum-half and although devastated in that moment, Le Bachelet has every right to feel proud of her efforts in getting her side that close to the opposition, who edged home 26-24.
In fact, it was her own sniping try in the 84th minute that gave her the chance to draw the sides level, which would have been a fair reflection of a real see-saw battle.
There was little to suggest that would be the case after 25 minutes, by which time Irish, who flew out of the blocks, were 19 points ahead and seemingly cruising to victory.
But, inspired by their best player Tanya Scholtz and some powerful scrummaging, GRL gradually worked their way into the game and by midway through the second half they had drawn level with Scholtz scoring two tries and Justeen Baker the other.
