Ashford United hit them for six and it could have been 10.

Never before have Guernsey FC been so humbled in front of their home crowd, 788 of them being present at Footes Lane on Saturday to see this drubbing.

Sam Mott did not have a shot to save all afternoon in the Ashford goal, while 110 metres or so away at the other end Cal Stanton saved his teammates from an even bigger hammering.

Tony Vance wasn’t around to see it, but from his Pyrenees holiday base, rest assured he will have found out quickly what was going on and it was not a pretty sight.

The upshot of the result is that GFC now sit 10th in the table, 12 points off the play-offs and that candle of late season excitement finally blown out spectacularly by a quality opponent who left two of their best players at home and top scorer on the bench.

Long before the final whistle there was a stunned silence in the Garenne Stand, while the small number of Nuts and Bolts fans who had travelled over for the weekend were in their noisy element.

Clearly, those fans have an exciting last couple of months to look forward to, but for GFC it is now just a case of trying to maintain a top half placing and, for the players, trying to nail down Muratti places.

But, on this showing, one or two of them will be lucky to get anywhere near Springfield if the Ridunians are overcome next month.
