Guernsey racked up seven tries as they overcame Bedford Athletic 43-4 at a windswept Footes Lane on Saturday to stay top of London & South-East Premier on points difference from Rochford Hundred, who won 47-5 at CS Stags 1863.

Raiders are not in action again until their trip to Sidcup on Saturday 21 March, giving them a much-needed break, according to coach Jordan Reynolds.

‘There were stages out there when I was saying to [assistant coaches] Steve [Melbourne] and Malcolm [Barnes] that you could see we are mentally fatigued, our picking game wasn’t as good and our forward game in crossing that line wasn’t as good as it has been,’ he said.

‘I think with it just being a long season we are fatigued so having a week off to just let the boys properly rest up will be good then we will hit them [in training] the next week. We can sit back and watch how the other results go because there’s quite a few [re-arranged] games on next week.’

Joe Andresen was the star of the latest victory with a hat-trick of tries, while there were two for Doug Horrocks and one apiece for Matt Armstrong and Luke Sayer. On the downside, Reynolds revealed that Anthony Armstrong is likely to be side-lined for several weeks as he is to undergo an operation on a broken finger.

‘Four games to go, two home, two away, all tough games to be fair, especially with the task of picking up bonus points,’ Reynolds said.

‘We’ve got Sidcup away next, which will be a really tough fixture because they’ve had some good results at their place, then a huge one against Wimbledon. I don’t think we can look too far ahead, though. We’ve got to focus on what we are going to do against Sidcup.’
