Desperques hits season’s first ton
MARTYN DESPERQUES struck the first century of the season as all three matches in the Premier Division ended 8-4.
A brilliant 111 clearance against Colin Gilbert racked up another significant milestone in the process, being the 100th made locally in competitive snooker.
Poor Gilbert was mostly a bystander as Desperques also opened up with a 69 on the way to all three frames, but La Villette Hotel Gremlins did not have things all their own way when Dave Gilmour won his first for Imperium Strokers. It could easily have been more, too, but Darren Hughes won the next two by just one and 10 points.
A sizeable win looked set to lay the opening week’s defeat to rest as La Villette extended their advantage to 8-1, but three late frames for the Strokers included a 40 for Kelvin Du Feu in beating Adrian Holley 2-1.
There were some dominant performances in the match between Ex-Service Stunners and the Sledgehammers, most notably John Skillett and Glenn Le Prevost at either end of the card.
Skillett scored one short of 200 points in beating reserve Jim Wilson, but the Stunners were still very much in touch at half-way.
An equally high-scoring win by the increasingly impressive Roscoe Cloarec, who added a 63 break in the process, tied the score up, but the Sledgehammers pulled away with Adam Shorto stumbling to a 2-1 win against Ross De Carteret. It was Le Prevost who shone most, though, with superb breaks of 86 and 93 helping him amass over 250 points.
Ex-Service Hot Butts brought North Legionnaires back down to earth with a bump after their surprise win against the champions.
It was a match where two players broke their personal best competitive breaks, with Tom Brock the first in making a fine 79 to close out his 2-1 win against Jamie Le Cheminant.
With Tristan Ozanne matching Brock’s result, there was nothing to choose between the two teams, but Clayton Le Noury and Scott Bradford dominated the second half for the Hot Butts.
Bradford’s outstanding match against Phil Cox saw him reply to his opponent’s 45 with a 51 clearance to go 2-0 up, then complete the win his best break in a clearance of 80.
