Not a dropped set between Lions' irresistible top trio
THE three leading players from Lions Table Tennis Club played starring roles in all the Division One matches last week.
There was no change at the top, though, as title rivals Lions A and Whistlers A both won again.
For leaders Lions A, Ben Foss was the star as he, along with Ryan Bichard, went unbeaten during their 8-2 victory over Lions D.
Foss was in good form on the evening and did not drop a set against Liam Robilliard, Steve Ozanne or Charlotte Casey.
Bichard was also fairly comfortable during his wins, but he did drop a set to Ozanne during a four-set win and had a few other close sets in his matches against Robilliard and Casey.
Foss polished off his evening when teaming with Jamie Ferbrache to defeat Robilliard and Ozanne in straight sets in the doubles rubber.
Ferbrache battled back excellently from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Casey in his opening match of the night, but lost to both Robilliard and Ozanne in four sets.
Phil Ogier was the thorn in the side of second-placed side Whistlers A for his third-placed Lions B side, but it was not enough as the Whistlers outfit came through 7-3.
Ogier was in super form with a trio of straight-sets wins over Lawrence Stacey, Matthew Casey and Ryan Gilson.
The victory over Stacey, the current leader of the top-flight averages, was done in style, with none of the ends going past the regulation 11 points.
Stacey, Gilson and Casey were very solid in their other matches against Dawn Morgan and Andre De Carteret to make sure of the win.
Morgan battled hard in each of her matches and lost them all in four sets, while De Carteret led Gilson 2-1 before losing out in a deciding fifth end.
Stacey and Casey won the doubles encounter over Morgan and De Carteret in straight sets.
The final match of the week saw Paul Hainsworth emerge unbeaten in singles action for his fifth-placed Lions C side, who were edged out 6-4 by fourth-placed Whistlers B.
Like Ogier, Hainsworth was in good form on the night and he did not drop a set during his singles wins against Joshua Stacey, Ben Sharp and Ellis Tomlin.
The win against current Island men’s singles champion Stacey was the pick of the bunch as Stacey was restricted to just 17 points over the three ends courtesy of some strong attacking table tennis.
However, Stacey and Sharp each played well in their other singles matches and earned wins over Andy Gill and Lions’ Second Division reserve Jonah Ingrouille.
Tomlin added a further win over Ingrouille in straight sets and it was the pivotal doubles rubber won by Stacey and Tomlin over Hainsworth and Gill in three tight sets which sealed the win for the Whistlers side.
Gill did well to pick up a consolation four-set win over Tomlin.
