The Betway CI Sports Awards take place on Thursday 8 February at Beau Sejour and, from now until lines close that evening, the public are invited to cast votes for the top prize.

Guernsey cyclist Sam Culverwell, triathlete Josh Lewis and footballer Alex Scott are in the mix, with table-tennis talent Hannah Silcock carrying Jersey’s hope.

Culverwell overcame a challenging start to 2023 – his team folded just before race season began – to win two individual golds and five medals overall at the home Island Games.

His golds had come through a memorable sprint to the line in the road race and a huge victory in the town criterium.

In the newer discipline of gravel racing, he placed third in the British Championships and went on to represent GB at the ‘Worlds’.

Lewis defended his individual triathlon title convincingly on the opening day of the Games, adding team and relay silver medals.

Through the season, he secured two podiums in professional 70.3-mile events and later placed fifth – the highest finish by a British triathlete since Alastair Brownlee in 2019 – in the World Championships for the distance. He later smashed the Guernsey record on his Ironman 140.6 debut.

Scott achieved his footballing dream in 2023 – becoming a Premier League player.

The Sarnian signed for Bournemouth in a deal reportedly worth £25m. following another impressive season at Bristol City, which saw him named as the Championship’s Young Player of the Season.

He finished the year with his first top-flight goal on New Year’s Eve.

Teenager Silcock became Jersey’s first-ever women’s British table tennis champion, doing so by winning the singles at the Home Nations International in Bangor.

She also won singles and team gold, alongside two other medals, on her Games debut.

Five other awards will also be presented on the night, for which several Guernsey sporting stars and stalwarts are in contention.
