GFC drop back into relegation zone after Ashford defeat
Ashford Town gave their own survival hopes a boost as they dragged Guernsey FC back into the Isthmian South Central relegation zone on Tuesday night.
The Green Lions were soundly beaten 5-0, a result that saw them drop a place in the table on goal difference, and GFC coach Steve Sharman admitted that his side’s unbeaten run in 2025 had deservedly come to an end.
‘We were really outdone by opposition who were very up for the game,’ he said.
‘They were aggressive, put a very good press on, and Seb Sheppard, who has done very well for us, was struggling because he could not kick so we were very deep.
‘We were overpowered and they were 5% better than us in every area of the game. Sometimes you just have to put your hands up and say we got what we deserved – 5-0 did not flatter Ashford.’
Due to injuries and unavailability GFC had travelled with a squad of 13 and, in what is a busy period for the Green Lions, their options were limited.
However, Sharman did not look for excuses. His side were two down by half-time after goals from Sam Humphries and Scott Day before a Charlton Gauvain own goal increased the gap early in the second half.
George Vorster and Jayden Porter Atkinson completed the rout.
‘We should have scored from our kick-off routine and we had a stonewall penalty turned down at 2-0, but we were not good enough on the day,’ Sharman said.
‘Like all teams at this time of year, Ashford have brought a few players in. There were some changes from the side they had out on Saturday and they were an enthusiastic group who worked their socks off.
‘We just have to leave that game behind now and move on to Saturday.’
