Chimney Fire in Vale Road leads to temporary closure
Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service were called to a property in Vale Road this evening after residue in a chimney ignited.
GFRS were on scene for an hour an half assessing the property, making sure it was safe and pouring water down the chimney to ensure there were no further sparks.
Guernsey Police blocked off the road to both vehicles and pedestrians during this time.
‘The building has a converted attic space with two rooms, which doesn’t allow for very good access as it can be quite boxed in,' said watch commander Dave Wallace. 'Because of the location of the chimney, we used the turntable ladder to allow us a safe working environment.'
Mr Wallace said that although there was no interior damage to the property, the incident served as a reminder to homeowners to keep their chimneys clean.
'We advise people to have their chimneys sweeped at the beginning and the end of the winter, certainly if you have a log fire, as residue builds up and can ignite in the chimney like this one has'.
The road has now re-opened.
