CRAIG DOREY did Guernsey proud at the WIBC World Under-25 Bowls Championships at the Auchinleck Club in Ayrshire yesterday, when he led his Scottish partner, Lisa Barrett, to the mixed pairs title.

'That's one better than I did two years ago, when I lost in the final with Nor Iryani Azmi, from Malaysia,' said Dorey (pictured), after the scratch pairing, who had not met before these championships, beat England's Amy Stanton and Ireland's Patrick Burns, 10-1, 3-9, 2-1, in the final.

'I feel over the moon about this success, but also because I played really well in the singles and pairs,' added Dorey, who is 25.

'It's all the more gratifying considering I was at death's door a few months ago, when I suffered an aortic aneurysm, so you can imagine how fantastic it feels to be a world champion.'

Dorey played a succession of superb bowls to keep a firm grip on the first set after he and Barrett, who is only 17, took a 6-0 lead after only four ends.
