Chesney's on our side
HE may be the one and only, but 1990s pop star Chesney Hawkes would be happy to share his iconic lyrics with Guernsey's league-topping footballers, the Green Lions.
The singer-songwriter (pictured), best known for his single The One and Only, which topped the UK charts in 1991, was happy to take time out fromrehearsals for Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Beau Sejour this week to fly the flag for the island team.
GFC organisers are urging fans to come up with an anthem for the squad, currently unbeaten and blazing a trail through the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League, in which they have won six games and drawn one.
If Chesney's single was to be adopted, then one of Guernsey's very own legends would certainly be happy.
The song is a particular favourite of former England and Southampton star turned Sky Sports TV pundit Matt Le Tissier.
The lyrics to both songs are below.
The One And Only
written by Nik Kershaw
I am the one and only oh yeah
Call me, call me by my name or call me by number
You put me through it
I'll still be doing it the way I do it
And yet, you try to make me forget
Who I really am, don't tell me I'm no best
I'm not the same as all the rest
Chorus:
I am the one and only
Nobody I'd rather be
I am the one and only
You can't take that away from me
I've been a player in the crowd scene
A flicker on the big screen
My soul embraces one more in a million faces
High hopes and aspirations, and years above my station
Maybe but all this time I've tried to walk with dignity and pride
Chorus
I can't wear this uniform without some compromises
Because you'll find out that we come
In different shapes and sizes
No one can be myself like I can
For this job I'm the best man
And while this may be true, you are the one and only you
Chorus

I'm Forever Eating Beanjar
by James Dupont
(to the tune of I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles)
I'm forever eating beanjar
Beanjar 'til the cows come home.
Green Lions chew
An ormer or two
With Guernsey tomatoes and a good local brew.
We like the wind behind us,
The beanjar helps us roar.
I'm forever eating beanjar
Then we'll know we'll score one more.'
