Run by the Guernsey Sports Commission, the event also featured a mascot race for the first time.

‘We’ve done this before but this is the biggest event yet and with the most sports,’ said GSC communications director Nicky Will.

New sports for 2022 included dance, gymnastics, trampolining, skateboarding and a cross country cycling challenge.

Imogen Mauger, 11, who goes to the Grammar School, was demonstrating some skill at gymnastics.

‘My favourite sports are gymnastics, dance and netball,’ she said.

Her half-sister, Lexi Holberry, 9, who goes to Amherst, was jumping on the trampoline.

‘I’ve got one at home and I can do front flips on it,’ she said.

‘It’s nice to have things to do.’

Her nan, Martine Holberry, agreed.

‘I’ve got four of my grandchildren down here today and everything is free,’ she said.

‘It’s nice to get them out in the open and give them a bit of fresh air so I think this is really good.’

Three members of Guernsey’s 2022 Commonwealth Games team, Billy Le Poullain, Abbi Galpin, and Lucy Beere were there to talk about their recent successes in a question and answer session. Additional benefits this year included support from the Health Improvement Commission which created an active travel route map to encourage people to find alternative transport to the fun day than the motor car.

To the amusement of many, some 50 ducks left the pond to pick at the grass among the sports area, seemingly oblivious to what was happening around them.
