The next stage of the Bailiff’s Cross Road fibre installation by Sure starts tomorrow, with Rue Piette closing between Les Bourgs Hospice and Castel Church, cutting off the last chance to divert via Talbot Valley.

The diversion for this stage of the work was yesterday listed as Rohais de Haut, Rohais, King’s Road and Mount Row.

But Guernsey Electricity has moved on to the next stage of its electricity cable installation, with the Rohais and Rohais de Haut closed until Sunday.

The diversion now means that drivers from Castel Church are being sent down Rectory Hill, along Rue des Varendes and Footes Lane, and then rejoining the Rohais at Collings Road, before facing the rest of the lengthy diversion if they wish to head towards St Martin’s.

Waitrose will be accessible from the eastern end of the Rohais.

A Traffic & Highway Services spokesman confirmed that the Rohais would reopen next week, with drivers needing to divert around Bailiff’s Cross Road facing a ‘shorter route’ then.

‘Both of these road closures are necessary to facilitate works on our critical infrastructure,’ he said.

‘Although it was not possible to separate out these works, Traffic & Highway Services staff have been working closely with Guernsey Electricity to reduce the disruption along Rohais de Bas to the school holidays and to limit the full closure of the junction with Rohais de Bas/Rohais de Haut junction to a weekend period.

‘When considering such applications, there is a balance to be struck between making our journeys as convenient as possible whilst ensuring important works to benefit us all can be delivered within reasonable timeframes.’

Sure has been undertaking the 18-week project work along Bailiff’s Cross Road since late July, working northwards from the Dairy.

Guernsey Fibre has now completed 1,326 metres of the 1,910 metres in the roadworks project, which is currently 48 metres ahead of schedule.

The next phase consists of laying new ducts and fibre cables underground between Les Bourgs Hospice and the Castel Church.

Guernsey Fibre programme director Richard Cartland said: ‘Long-term roadworks are a challenge to a small island and we want to thank everyone for their patience, as we complete these works to future-proof our island’s telecommunications for decades to come.’

Rue Piette residents will be able to access their homes as normal, as boards will be placed over trenches.

Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained throughout the upgrades to these roads.

Motorists can check the closure dates and diversions at roadworks.gov.gg.

The Rue Piette phase is due to be completed by 19 November, with the next phase down Rectory Hill run between 20 November and 15 December.
