Verona Tomlin, who is currently principal at La Mare de Carteret High School, will lead both schools as they gradually merge until La Mare closes to 11-16 students in the summer of 2025 and is converted into a temporary Sixth Form Centre.

On 27 November, Mrs Tomlin will take over at Les Varendes from Kieran James, who will become principal of the school’s Sixth Form Centre.

‘Over the last few months, Mr James and I have been working closely on the transition plans and I will continue to benefit from his support, particularly in the sixth form,’ said Mrs Tomlin in a letter to parents.

‘Over the coming weeks, I will spend more time at the Les Varendes site and Mark Ramsay, deputy head teacher, will take on the day-to-day responsibilities for leading La Mare High School.

‘Mr Ramsay will be well supported by all of our staff, whose priority continues to be a commitment to deliver high-quality education to all of our students.’

The staff moves, announced in May, are part of Education, Sport & Culture’s plan to create 11-16 schools on three sites and redevelop the Guernsey Institute alongside a separate sixth form centre at Les Ozouets, funding for which will continue to be debated by the States when its annual Budget meeting resumes next week.
