States Infrastructure officer Marco Tersigni said the work had to be scheduled and co-ordinated around the tidal conditions.

‘We proactively carry out routine maintenance to protect and improve our natural and man-made coastal infrastructure in priority order,’ he said.

‘Works to repoint both piers at Salerie and carry out masonry repairs began at the end of October and are due to be completed in the first quarter of 2025.

He said it was hard to predict when the piers would need to be repointed again.

‘These works are expected to last for at least 10 years-plus before requiring further maintenance, but storm events can damage any coastal defence structure without warning,’ he said.
