Seafront spoilt, money wasted

WHERE are our politicians taking this island? What are they doing with our money?

Published

The answer to those questions is in limbo because they don't know themselves.

Look at the money spent in destroying the whole of the seafront from the bus terminus to the Bridge. The whole lot has been bottle-necked into a dangerous area where some people are afraid to go, whether driving or walking.

From the day they started putting the bike path down, to the present day where they have tried to adapt the Town for the people off cruise ships, it has become more dangerous and more of an eyesore.

They keep on about how much the people off these ships spend and yet we hear time and time again people with businesses in Town complaining about the drop in business with all the alterations made by the States to accommodate them.

Let's be honest – the people visiting the island off these ships are not returning to them with arm-loads of goodies. Most will only buy a fridge magnet and/or a postcard.

No one in the States seems to take on board that this island is expensive and people can get bigger, better value elsewhere on their travels.

They also refuse to take on board that it is not what the majority of the people (and I am talking about Guernsey people) want.

We keep hearing our illustrious leader saying, 'we are where we are,' and other members of the incompetent committees who have ruined this island saying, 'we will review everything and alter it at a later date,' but why not look at things and listen to the public before they spend thousands/millions of pounds (which, don't forget, is our money) on doing things that even a clown can see will not work and are not safe?

I know the big argument politicians will come up with now is the fact that the Enough is Enough campaign only had probably a third of people turn out at their latest rally.

They seem to think this is a victory for them (the government) but the stark truth is people I have spoken to have declared that they are not prepared to stand for hours listening to a bunch of people giving a load of lip service and in real terms not taking a bit of notice what the people want anyway.

The roads will stay bottle-necked, the schools will still close, they will still spend money stupidly, and they will not fulfil the promises in their manifestos – so what is the point?

Personally, I could not make out why the white lines were painted so far out and away from the kerb on the shops' side of the road along the quay. From one car width to around two/two-and-a-half car widths.

This, it turns out, is because they are looking at alfresco dining along there.

Funny how a noticeboard for a business can have to be removed because it is hazardous for the blind and yet (it appears) they would not fall over tables and chairs.

Sorry – I was forgetting, we have to look good for the visitors.
