'Free' preschool places will have a price tag

I WAS shocked by the 19th century attitude to women revealed by the States' decision to spend mothers' family allowance for them. Are we too irresponsible to decide for ourselves what is the best use of this money for our children?

Are we too unintelligent to not realise that 'free' preschool education is actually going to be paid for by every child under the age of 16? Each child will lose £124.80 a year (£1,996.80 from birth to 16 years.)

Deputy Sillars has said how disappointed he is that 30 to 35 of the richest children in the island will not have these 'free' preschool hours but he has made no apology to the equal number of children at the other end of the income spectrum whose families are going to struggle to manage with this reduced family allowance.
