HE COULD afford to go the wrong way, but Jersey's highly talented distance runner Elliott Dorey still had enough about him to claim his second straight win in the FNB Winter League.

The brief unplanned diversion meant he had to dig deeper than he might have expected to hold off young Danny Ray and a fast finishing Dave Emery, who picked off several rivals in a strong second two-mile circuit of the four-miler over the club's Millennium Stone course.

Dorey said it was his own fault that he took himself, Ray and Michael Batiste astray on the first circuit as the three front runners began the winding descent from the top of the hill by the 17th green.

'There was nothing wrong in the course marking – it was my fault,' said the Island Games gold medal winning star.

At the finish Dorey had to use his speed to hold off Emery, while Ray was very tired as he crossed in third from Bodkin.

In ninth, leading woman Louise Perrio had one place and 16sec. on Mercier, while Nikki Neal was third female finisher, 2min. 18sec. behind Perrio.
