IT WAS like he had never been away.

There was no great city crowd to roar him on, but almost a year-and-a-half after Lee Merrien ran his last race – the Olympic Games marathon – Guernsey's greatest returned impressively in a low-key five-mile race yesterday morning.
But it was no cruise, despite the winning margin of nearly two-and-a-half-minutes.
Merrien gave it virtually everything as he battled into a strong headwind most of the way to win in an impressive 25min. 45sec.
'I got my head down and worked,' he said at the North Beach finish line.
'It's a shame about the headwind because it doesn't give me a true reflection of where I am.
'It was quite tough and pretty much headwind all the way.'
