James' time of 8min. 7sec. was five seconds quicker than reigning champion Matt Loveridge and despite a record entry of nearly 70 athletes, the seven-day series is already looking like it might be a two-man race.
Jim de Garis was third with a time of 8-40, but is already over 30 seconds off the lead.
However, de Garis faces a tough challenge to hold on to his podium place as he was a mere second quicker than Tom Shaw, Alun Brown and leading woman Louise Perrio.
Tonight's stage two is the 8km cliff path run starting from Icart Point.
