Saints lay down a marker

ST MARTIN’S had plenty of problems with Sylvans last season but on Saturday evening walloped the westerners 5-1 to lay down a marker for the rest of the league.

Having watched Belgraves win against Rangers in the afternoon and briefly extend their lead to six points, Saints responded in the manner their coach, Leon Meakin, expected them to do, scoring four times in a 10 minute spell.

‘The first 30 minutes I was pretty pleased with our performance then we gave them a bit of a soft goal. We switched off after going 1-0 up,’ said Meakin later.

‘But we knew it was going to be a really tight game with few chances.

'But the second half we changed our shape slightly and we got that second goal we kicked on again.’

Meakin made several changes and one of them, Ollie Smith appearing up front, responded with a goal.

‘We have got such a strong squad that when we make changes from the bench we don’t expect a drop in performance levels.’

Meakin singled out unsung midfielder Eti Le Prevost for special praise.

‘Eti was absolutely superb. I’m one of his biggest fans, I make no secret of that.

‘He turns over so much ball in the middle of midfield and with it win so much possession because of his intensity and drive in there. He really makes us tick.’
