Guernsey players ready to fight for the shirt

SIAM CUP day has arrived and Guernsey Raiders Ladies coach Steve Evans emphasised exactly what it means for all those who will run onto the Footes Lane pitch today.

‘If you can’t motivate yourself to play in a Siam, then you shouldn’t be wearing the shirt, and I’ve got absolutely no doubt the girls will give it everything,’ he said.

‘They realise how big a deal it is to wear the green-and-white for Guernsey and particularly against Jersey, so nothing really to be said. It’ll be probably “keep calm, enjoy it, have fun” and that’s the most important thing.’

In what has been a transitional season for the GRL, they will have 14 players under-21 in their squad and eight debutants.

While admitting it has been a tough league season in terms of results, Evans added that it had been part of the building process.

‘They’ve gelled together really well, the atmosphere within the team is really good and I think everyone’s looking forward to it,’ he said.

‘The thing about having such a young squad is they almost know no fear if you like, they’re happy to go and play and play with a smile and enjoy it. And I think that’s when we play our best rugby.’
