Not such a super Sunday for Guernsey

JERSEY enjoyed double inter-insular success yesterday afternoon as they won both the under-21 and under-15 age-group Murattis.

While the Reds were retaining the Star Trophy thanks to a 2-0 success at Footes Lane, the home side were 4-2 winners in an eventful Ambassadeur Bowl match at Springfield.

Jersey U21s were given an early lead by striker Darryl Mvalo, who thumped a left-footed shot into the roof of the net and just before half-time they doubled their lead as man-of-the-match Toby Ritzema nodded home following a long-throw into the Guernsey box.

As the Sarnians pressed to get one back in the second half, they were caught on the counter-attack as just moments after Seb Vance had a shot blocked at one end, Luke Coutanche curled one into the top corner at the other.

Substitute Vieira added the fourth with his first touch after Guernsey keeper Seb Sheppard was left stranded having come out to the edge of his box, but there was still plenty more drama to come.

Jersey were reduced to 10 when James Sunley received a second yellow card and Guernsey immediately pulled a goal back when Archie Drillot turned in Keene Domaille’s low cross.

The Greens did not have their one-man advantage for long as Ben Solway was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Piers Roche, but they did get another goal back during more than 11 minutes of injury time as Brandon Wallace scored from a free-kick wide out on the right.

Meanwhile, Guernsey FC’s scheduled trip to Hanworth Villa on Saturday was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
