Les Varendes High School gets a summer upgrade

WORK to modernise the former Grammar School has taken place throughout the summer, bringing Les Varendes High School into its own.

The school has undergone a rebrand.

Blue doors with the school’s new logo welcome pupils onto the site, followed by brown internal doors to separate the school.

‘The pupils can’t get through into this area during the school day because of safety reasons, so another window into the reception office has been made so they can speak to the receptionists internally,’ said States of Guernsey building maintenance manager James Jordan.

What was formerly the Year 7 social area and locker room was repurposed into a classroom, but the school wanted to bring it back to another social area.

‘I cleared it to create a social area, but they changed their mind again, so the lighting has been upgrading to LED lighting to save a bit of money and it has been redecorated because it was looking really tired,’ said Mr Jordan.

Four of the corridors have been repainted, new clean ceiling tiles have been put in and LED lights installed, to replace the dull yellow-toned lights.

‘In some of the corridors that haven’t been done yet, you can see how bad the staining is on the roof tiles. Some of the windows were leaking and the rubber coming away but that is sorted now,’ he said.

‘There’s still a lot more work that needs to be done on this school to bring it up.

‘We’re tackling the worst affected areas. Some ceiling tiles are only slightly stained so they haven’t been completely replaced, but where they have and haven’t the difference is staggering.’

Last summer, renewing the roof was the largest project at Les Varendes.

This summer, the roof work continues, getting rid of asbestos tiles and replacing them with Spanish slate.
