MEATBALLS have been removed from Waitrose shelves locally after it was found that ingredients were not as declared on the label.

Frozen beef meatballs from its Essential range were withdrawn on Tuesday after it was found that some contained up to one-third pork.

An email sent by Waitrose to customers stated: 'Although the meatballs are safe to eat, pork is not listed as an ingredient and should not be part of the recipe.'

Waitrose advised that the affected product had best-before dates of June and August 2013.

Guernsey deputy chief environmental health officer Tobin Cook said that the situation was constantly developing but the department was remaining vigilant.
