A REVIEW of recreation legislation could take place if islanders continue to ignore wildlife on Guernsey's beaches, Environment has said.

The view follows comments from environmentalist Tim Earl this week, who criticised dog walkers and ormerers for ruining wildlife, particularly near the island's Ramsar site at L'Eree.

He blamed them for a decline in bird numbers and argued that a lack of political will to protect beaches was at the root of the problem.

Environment said it recognised there were 'serious shortfalls' in local legislation protecting wildlife, but that was just part of the issue.

It added it endeavoured to achieve a balance in managing Guernsey's beaches for public enjoyment, while considering wildlife and sea birds.
