GUERNSEY is 'blessed' with vast renewable energy potential according to a group of academics and students.

However, public hostility towards subsidies, 'clunky' planning processes and the size of the island itself means it is difficult to exploit.

A group of 45 undergraduates from Exeter University studying for a BSc in renewable energy have spent the last 15 days here examining a range of renewable energy options for islanders to consider.

Divided into teams and given access to policy makers, company executives and other interested parties, they studied offshore and onshore wind, solar projects, tidal power and energy storage among other options.

In a wide-ranging presentation, the heads of the student groups outlined their findings on the variety of renewable possibilities available to take Guernsey's energy strategy to 2050.
