Islanders want competition but also Aurigny protection

COMPETITION and protectionism are a tough balancing act, islanders have said after it was announced Treasury and Resources intends to introduce strict new air licensing policies.

For some, the status quo was the way forward, but the island's own airline should have special measures in place to see that it does not unduly suffer from competition.

Alex Horsbrugh-Porter, 42, said the States are in a difficult position of having to ensure they do not sink endless sums of money into Aurigny and making sure islanders are not ripped off by an airline having a monopoly. 'People have affection for Aurigny, it is understandable that the States want to protect their investment but competition is good for the island and healthy competition is the way forward. I would travel with whoever has the lowest price.'

This was a sentiment shared by Michelle Blackmore, 61, who said the States were in a 'tricky' situation of having to balance investment against the island's needs. Guernsey, she said, must be wary of international airlines coming to the island and potentially devastating Aurigny.

'I think competition is good, but I do not want to see Aurigny go under.
