It was given to the Sark Action for Families and Employment steering group.

Chairman Tony Le Lievre, pictured, said that it would not expect islanders to repay the money.

It would not be means tested and payments would be on a first come, first served basis.

'Most of what is done on Sark is done on a trust basis,' said Mr Lievre.

Safe has 78 members, but help will be offered to non-members.

It was unclear how many people are unemployed in Sark as there is no formal welfare system and no records.
