Video: four-hour operation saves stranded dolphin

A DOLPHIN which washed up in Pembroke Bay yesterday morning was rescued with the help of islanders who endured hours of strong winds and lashing rain.

The young cetacean was spotted swimming in the bay at about 10.30am.

Sue Horsepool saw a fin in the water and asked her husband, Stuart, and a friend to come to see it.

When they returned, they realised that the animal was being forced towards the shore by the tide and wind.

The GSPCA was called and brought blankets and wet towels. The helpers repeatedly went into the surf to fetch more sea water to keep the animal cool during its four-hour beaching.

St John Ambulance and Rescue brought its inshore rescue boat, but there were concerns about launching it in the rough bay.

Instead, the animal was put on a basket stretcher and lifted into the boat on the trailer. It was then driven to Beaucette Marina.
