Two colleges to stick with England over exam changes

ELIZABETH and Ladies' colleges have decided against joining the Education Department's breakaway from England over exams.

It means the two colleges will adopt changes being brought about in England.

However, Blanchelande College will 'wait and see' before deciding whether to stick with England or follow Education.

Education has launched a consultation about the future of the island's secondary system, with a preferred option to set A-level and GCSEs from Northern Ireland and Wales, as well as international iGCSEs, rather than new English exams.

Minister Robert Sillars was concerned that the changes taking place in England – to scrap coursework assessment and rely predominantly on end-of-year exams – would disadvantage a significant number of pupils.

But Elizabeth College principal George Hartley, pictured, said the school had no plans to change.

Ladies' College principal Jo Riches said she had no concerns about sticking with England.
