Island Coachways managing director Hannah Beacom said limited resources were currently stretched to deliver school buses as well as commuter services.

But, she said, if measures detailed in the successful transport strategy minority report were fulfilled, the department should have sufficient capacity.

'The challenge facing the Environment Department will be to establish the needs of the travelling public and ensuring sufficient capacity at peak times,' she said.

'The minority report has included travel plans for schools, States departments and businesses.

'If car sharing, walking and cycling are actively promoted as part of the solution, there should be sufficient capacity on the improved bus services that were outlined in the minority report.'

The company has expressed an interest in tendering for the bus service contract when it comes up next year.

Mrs Beacom said the company had been encouraged by the 'brave' decision taken by the States last week to introduce paid parking, which she hoped would enable the strategy to be implemented in full.
