Blacks 'garish' sign falls foul of planners

A SMALL orange mountain sign outside Blacks in the Pollet has been deemed 'garish' by the planners and might have to come down.

The planning refusal comes with an extra warning to other firms, stating that businesses might have to compromise when it came to putting up corporate signs in St Peter Port.

Millets converted to Blacks a few months ago and the Pollet business was rebranded with a new black and white sign on the High Street side, along with the company's orange mountain logo.

New signs were also put up on the North Esplanade side.

But in a retrospective planning permission, planning director Jim Rowles said the sign had to be rejected.

'The signage erected is unacceptable for this traditional protected building in such a prominent part of the conservation area and in the centre of St Peter Port,' he said in the refusal notice.

Blacks Outdoor Retail Ltd company secretary Jane Brisley said they were disappointed that the company's usual logo had had permission refused.

'We are considering our options at this time,' she said.
