'Few people have problems with Town signs' say retailers

A REVIEW of all Town signs is unnecessary, according to retailers and shoppers.

After outdoor goods retailer Blacks was refused retrospective permission for the combination of its Town signs at its Pollet-based store, planning director Jim Rowles said an inspection would take place, including at the High Street, the Pollet and the Arcade.

Those spoken to by the Guernsey Press did not believe any shop signs in St Peter Port looked unsightly or detracted from the area's unique character.

Signs which have been up for more than four years will be exempt from action, but any newer ones without permission could see owners given a compliance notice to take them down.

Sail or Surf owner Brian Vohmann, pictured, did not believe the Blacks sign was unsightly.

He also did not see a problem with any other signs in St Peter Port.

'I think it is a waste of taxpayers' money,' he said of the proposed review.
