Vale Commons Council rejects States' L'Ancresse lease proposal

A DEAL putting the States in the middle of a lease for L'Ancresse golf course was 'unacceptable' to the Vale Commons Council, members of its working group have said.

The Royal Guernsey and L'Ancresse golf clubs have been given to the end of the year to accept terms of a new 25-year lease put forward by the group, which would see them pay £80,000 per annum for exclusive use of the courses.

Their current deal, which sees them pay just £50 each, runs out in 2015.

Speaking at a presentation of the working group's 25-year vision for the common, member Roger Dadd, pictured, said an offer had been put to the group by Culture and Leisure minister Mike O'Hara on behalf of the clubs that would have seen the States act as a 'middle man' on the lease.

'We said we aren't prepared to enter into an agreement for the golf course to be used exclusively by two clubs unless it was with those two clubs,' said Mr Dadd.

He added that therefore entering into an agreement that 'interposed' the States into the middle of it was unacceptable.

However, Deputy O'Hara said he thought the deal proposed was 'reasonable'.
