Nearly 80 German mines – 28 of which were unexploded – were uncovered and dealt with by bomb disposal officers.

PCs Simon Hamon and Stuart Allan, from Guernsey Police's bomb disposal unit, were sent to Sark on Friday (14 Nov)after some of the buried anti-personnel mines were uncovered, as they were ploughed over, in a field near the Bel Air public house.

They travelled to the island again to carry out the detonation.

PC Hamon said the bombs were carried to a field adjacent to the one where they were found, so the explosions were at a safe distance from houses.

'We did get a few people to press the button, we do it a lot, but there were some people who helped us and they deserved it.'

PC Hamon also thanked the Sark constable, Glynn Williams, and the vingtenier who helped and facilitated the overnight cordons at the site.

'They were exceptional,' he said.
