Co-op shareholders vote to back board

A HOSTILE reception greeted the Channel Island Co-operative Society's board at a shareholders' private meeting last night.

But members did back plans to close local warehouses.

The business announced in September its plans to close the Jersey and Guernsey warehouses and relocate the distribution services to Andover.

This will result in the loss of 23 jobs in Guernsey and 68 in Jersey.

Under 200 people attended last night's meeting at Beau Sejour – far fewer than in Jersey, when around 400 people packed the Radisson Blu Hotel.

Votes from Guernsey were combined with Jersey votes, so it is not known how each island voted.

Members voted 237 in favour of closing the local warehouses and 131 against.
