Car taxes delayed but not dumped

ENVIRONMENT has slammed the brakes on its controversial width and C02 tax proposals, but the department is just stalling for time and will seek to pass them when 'we least expect it', according to the leader of a campaign against the taxes.

Late yesterday it was announced the department would delay debate on the ordnance which introduces the duty levies – which would have added thousands to the cost of some newly-registered cars – until January,

Crucially, though, the department said it had no plans to abandon them altogether, despite sustained political and public pressure over the topic.

Organiser of the Enough is Enough public protest K'Han Holden said they were working to ensure the subject did not go out of the limelight, but he believed it would still be adopted.

'Far from a victory, they are simply stalling so they can pass it when we least expect it.'

Minister Yvonne Burford, pictured, said the delay was to allow any changes to the strategy to be properly analysed. The tax was still on its way – just not as early as expected, she said.
