Lottery tickets sent to Jersey to meet demand

GUERNSEY may have shipped 50,000 lottery tickets to Jersey, but organisers insist local charities are still set for more money than last year.

The winner of the Channel Islands Christmas Lottery will be announced tomorrow evening with the jackpot currently at a record high of £1.15m.

Guernsey stepped in to help Jersey after stocks ran low there.

A spokesperson for Culture and Leisure said: 'In the spirit of the Channel Islands Lottery, it would be expected that Jersey would do the same if the roles were reversed.

'If tickets are transferred inter-island, there is the potential for a reduced allocation to that island's charities, however the good news for Guernsey is that we have sold more tickets so the Association of Guernsey Charities should have a larger fund than last year.'

One lottery supporter has been selling them 'out and about' since 1971.

When it was introduced that year, newsagent John Brouard, 66, pictured, said he wanted to 'get involved'.

'I've been standing here, outside Creasey's, for over 40 years now selling the tickets and these last few days are without a doubt my busiest.

'On Saturday, I was standing out here until one in the morning.

'With only a few days left for people to buy their tickets, I'm getting a lot of people enquiring. I'll probably sell a couple of hundred today at least.'
