Environment created the additional category of taxi plate earlier this year.

They have now been issued to the four drivers after they completed a training course to help them meet the needs of all people with long-term conditions, not just wheelchair users.

To ensure that the new taxis safely meet the needs of as many disabled islanders as possible, the department created a minimum specification for the vehicle including the width of the ramp and brightness of the internal lighting.

Trainer Ian Campbell, from Liberty Bus Jersey, said taxis had to have wide, shallow ramps and secure restraints for the wheelchair so that it was safe and comfortable.
