Out of almost 500 respondents, tidal proved the most popular technology at 86%, followed by solar with 81% and wave energy at 80% while offshore wind was supported by 58% of people.

Results from the survey also showed that islanders would be willing to pay more for locally-generated offshore renewable energy – 61% of respondents would pay extra for energy from offshore wind, while that rises to 74% if it was tidal power.

The three-year PhD research, carried out by Bouke Wiersma and supervised by Professor Patrick Devine-Wright of the University of Exeter, focused on perceptions and views of tidal, wave and offshore wind energy.
