Letting someone turn fort into a home 'best for States'

CONVERTING historic Fort Richmond into a single home is the most sensible option available to the States, according to those behind the project.

Treasury and Resources, through its States Property Services division, will ask deputies to agree next week that the site be sold, converted and listed on Part A of the open market housing register.

The fort, which dates back to the 1850s, has been unoccupied for a number of years.

Previously used for social housing, premises for a surf club in the 1970s and as a base for a religious youth organisation, Young Life, in the 1980s, the building is in need of considerable repairs.

Tony Spruce, chairman of the property services sub-committee, pictured, said now was the time for the States to sell the building for conversion.
